Introduction
Following on from the successful launch in February 2008, Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board Training continues to offer an innovative way of undertaking safeguarding children training. The programmes are ideal for anyone who comes into contact with children, young people, their parents or caregivers through their work and who are endorsed by the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board (DSCB). The training is hosted by the Virtual College, one of the UK's leading e-learning providers.
The two e-learning Modules and on-line assessment provide a flexible alternative delivery route for Introductory Level Basic Awareness.
There are two different learning pathways for Basic Awareness:
The Core Introduction Module is aimed at individuals who are working directly with children, young people and their families. These practitioners will have some professional or organisational responsibility in relation to safeguarding children.
The Foundation Module is most appropriate for individuals in a paid or voluntary capacity who may have contact with children and young people but do not work directly with them.
Both courses cover similar material but the Core Introduction deals with this in more depth as appropriate for the increased level of contact that staff will have with children and their families. For more information please follow the link: Basic Awareness
Advanced Courses
The DSCB now provides opportunities for all staff to access advanced training courses online. The courses are aimed to take approximately 2 hours and are free for all partner agencies. For further information and / or prices please contact dscbtraining@doncaster.gov.uk
Listed below are the most popular courses:
DOMESTIC ABUSE
On average, survivors of domestic abuse contact 11 agencies before obtaining the help they need. On average a woman is assaulted 35 times before she reports an assault to the police. Domestic abuse is equally prevalent among all income groups and among people from all ethnic groups. Women who have experienced domestic abuse are 15 times more likely to abuse alcohol, 9 times more likely to abuse drugs, 3 times more likely to be diagnosed as depressed pr psychotic and 5 times more likely to attempt suicide.
Considering these statistics, this e-learning course is suitable for any worker who is in regular contact or works regularly with children, young people and their families. The course will raise your awareness of the issues surrounding domestic abuse particularly for those workers that come into contact with survivors.
HIDDEN HARM
Hidden Harm is the effect of parental drug and alcohol misuse on children. It is estimated that there are 1.5 million children of problem drug and alcohol users in the UK. (ACMD 2006) Services naturally focus their attention on the problem user; but in this process, the effects on the children can be overlooked. There is now a government directive that aims to raise awareness of this issue and increase opportunities for early intervention.
This course is designed for anyone who works with children, young people and their families. The course aims to raise awareness of the issues affecting the children of problem substance users. It helps the learner to spot the signs of harm and identify appropriate windows of opportunity to break the cycle and safeguard the child.
The course has been developed by 5 Drug and Alcohol teams nationally and peer reviewed by panels of experts in the field.
SAFER RECRUITMENT
Local Safeguarding Boards have a responsibility to ensure that agencies named under Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 have safer recruitment practices in place. This module will assist those involved in recruitment in ensuring they meet these requirements.
The module considers statistics relating to safer recruitment, statistics are important as they simplify the size of the problem. It also considers the background to the introduction of the more robust safer recruitment processes, which followed the Bichard Inquiry, which looked at the recruitment of Ian Huntley in the Soham case.
INFORMATION SHARING
This course aims to change the perception that information sharing and data security are complex issues by simplifying and clarifying the processes so that the learner feels more confident in understanding what they can share, when they can share it and with whom.
Over four million people in the UK work with children, young people and their families. This module will be useful to all frontline practitioners who deal with children and who will need to share information about cases. The focus of this module is the importance of information sharing, why it is important and who it can affect.
