What is the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board?
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people requires effective coordination in every local area. For this reason the Children Act (2004) set out a statutory requirement that every local authority must establish a Local Safeguarding Children Board. In October 2005 the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board had its first meeting and outlined its key roles and responsibilities as guided by the Children Act (2004).
The Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board is the key statutory mechanism for agreeing how organisations working with children and young people cooperate to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in Doncaster.
The core objectives of the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board as outlined in the Children Act (2004) are:
to co-ordinate what is done by each person or body represented on the Board for the purposes of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in the area of the authority;
to ensure the effectiveness of what is done by each such person or body for that purpose.
… or in other words – the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board monitors how local services for children and young people are planned and delivered in Doncaster.
What does the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board do?
To deliver the objectives set out above, the Doncaster Safeguarding Children Board has the following responsibilities:
To develop or update policies and procedures for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
To contribute to the planning of services.
To communicate the need to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
To plan and deliver multi-agency training.
To undertake reviews of serious cases.
To review child deaths and coordinate responses to unexpected child deaths.
To monitor and evaluate how well agencies work to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.
